How to Record a Technician Vehicle Inspection Video
Summary:
Learn how to record a professional inspection video for a customer, ensuring safety, clarity, and transparency throughout the process. This guide outlines best practices for setup, recording, and presenting findings so your customer feels confident in your work.
Before You Begin
Make sure your workspace is clean and free of debris. Safety is always your first priority.
Have the following items ready before you start recording:
-
Customer’s repair order on your workbench
-
A flashlight (phone-integrated or pen-style)
-
A laser pointer for highlighting parts or issues
-
Your recording device (phone or tablet) with enough storage and battery
Step 1: Prepare Your Work Area
-
Ensure your bay floor and surrounding area are clear of hazards or loose tools.
-
Place the repair order on your workbench.
-
When you start the video, begin by showing the repair order so the customer can confirm you’re working on their vehicle.
Step 2: Begin Recording
-
Start your video and introduce yourself clearly.
Example:“Hello, my name is Marco. I’m your certified technician today taking care of your vehicle.”
-
Mention the reason for the visit, such as a check engine light, recall, or multi-point inspection.
-
Transition into explaining your inspection process.
Step 3: Inspect the Exterior and Undercarriage
-
Start at the front of the vehicle. Keep your recording device close so your voice is clear.
-
Check and record:
-
Undercarriage damage
-
Curb rash or skid plate wear
-
Front-end components
-
-
Move to the left front side and inspect:
-
Tires (tread, edge wear, embedded debris)
-
Brakes (thickness, wear pattern)
-
Suspension components (sway bars, control arms, CV boots)
-
Use your laser pointer or finger to indicate specific areas.
-
-
Continue toward the rear of the vehicle, showing:
-
Any oil or fluid leaks
-
Transmission and exhaust system condition
-
Any visible damage or corrosion
-
Step 4: Inspect the Rear and Tires
-
Show the rear tires and compare left vs. right wear patterns.
-
Identify and record any:
-
Nails or debris
-
Brake wear
-
Suspension condition
-
-
Capture the license plate clearly at some point to confirm the vehicle’s identity.
Step 5: Lower the Vehicle and Inspect Under the Hood
-
Pause the video and lower the lift.
-
Walk around the vehicle and open the hood.
-
Remove the engine cover and air filter from the housing.
-
Resume the video and show:
-
The condition of the used filter
-
A new filter side-by-side for comparison
-
Fluid reservoirs, including washer fluid
-
Loose cowlings or debris near the windshield
-
Drive belts, pulleys, and hoses for wear or damage
-
Tip: Tap your screen to take a screenshot of any component you need to document further.
Step 6: Finish the Video
-
Step back to show the entire vehicle.
-
Thank the customer and close with a friendly message, such as:
“Thank you for choosing our dealership. We appreciate the opportunity to care for your vehicle.”
-
End the recording and upload the video as per your dealership’s process.
Key Tips
-
Keep narration clear and steady—avoid long pauses.
-
Always show what you’re describing.
-
Use consistent lighting (flashlight if needed).
-
Ensure your video remains focused on the customer’s vehicle and their repair needs.
Expected Result:
A clear, professional inspection video that builds customer trust and helps them understand the condition of their vehicle.
